Day 3
On the third day of this 7-day Moroccan adventure, you’ll embark on a memorable journey by road. After breakfast at your riad in Fez, we’ll head south toward the majestic landscapes awaiting us in the Middle Atlas Mountains.
Our first stop will be Ifrane, a town sitting at around 1,700 meters above sea level. Known for its neat streets and distinctive Alpine-style houses with sloped roofs, Ifrane stands out from any other Moroccan city earning it the nickname “Moroccan Switzerland.”
A short drive away lies Ifrane National Park, also called Cedar Forest or Monkey Forest. This protected area is one of Morocco’s ecological treasures, home to vast cedar groves and the endangered Barbary macaque, the only wild monkey species living north of the Sahara. These forests offer a glimpse into Morocco’s rich biodiversity.
From there, we’ll cross the Middle Atlas and begin descending into drier landscapes. Following the course of the Ziz Valley, you’ll notice the terrain gradually transform lush vegetation giving way to rocky plains and scattered palm groves, signaling the approach of the Sahara.
We’ll pass through Erfoud, known for its fossil-rich soil and marble production, before reaching Merzouga, the gateway to the desert. Here, you’ll trade the vehicle for camels and ride into the heart of Erg Chebbi vast golden sand dunes that feel like another world.
As the sun sets, we’ll arrive at your desert camp. Traditional Berber tea will be served upon arrival, followed by a delicious dinner under a breathtaking sky full of stars. Day 4
On the fourth day of this week-long journey through Morocco, we’ll start with one of the most breathtaking moments of the entire trip: sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The soft, pure light of dawn illuminating the desert landscape is truly unforgettable and well worth the early wake-up. After taking in the view, you’ll enjoy breakfast at the tented camp and ride camels back to Merzouga. Depending on your travel package, there will also be time for a refreshing shower either at the camp or a nearby hotel.
Once back in Merzouga, we’ll switch back to our private vehicle and continue the road trip. Our first destination will be Rissani, a town full of historic charm. Its traditional medina, vibrant local market, and even its donkey parking area offer glimpses into a way of life that has changed little over the centuries.
From Rissani, the journey continues through strikingly varied landscapes. You’ll pass rocky outcrops, palm-lined valleys, and small Berber villages nestled in the hills. All of this scenery converges in Tinghir (or Tinerhir), whose name in the Tamazight language means “mountain city” a fitting description for its scenic location and authentic character.
Soon after, we’ll enter one of the natural highlights of this entire week: the Todra Gorge. Over millennia, the Todra River has carved out a dramatic canyon, where massive cliffs rise up to 200 meters on either side. Whether walking along the gorge or viewing it from the twisting road that passes through, the spectacle is unforgettable.
After this scenic stop, we’ll continue into the Dades Valley, an area rich in natural beauty and traditional Berber culture. Nestled in this valley is a small village where we’ll settle into a charming riad for the night. Dinner will be served there, offering a cozy and restful end to a day filled with awe-inspiring experiences.

The morning of this fifth day will take us along the Dades Valley and through the fragrant Valley of Roses so named for the abundant cultivation of roses, which play a vital role in the local economy. Both valleys lie along the famous Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, known for the many Berber fortresses scattered across the landscape.
We’ll stop to explore a few of these historic sites, starting with the Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate. Once the palace of the powerful Pasha of Marrakech and Sultan of the Atlas, this kasbah preserves much of its original structure. Its interior still features ornate decorations in ceramic, wood, and plaster, showcasing the region’s distinctive architectural heritage.
The next stop is even more remarkable: the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou. This fortified hillside village, with its tall towers and cascading adobe homes, is considered the most iconic example of traditional Berber architecture. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a favorite filming location for major productions such as Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, Babel, and The Sheltering Sky.
Following our visit to these two fortresses, we’ll approach the High Atlas Mountains. Crossing this range via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass over 2,200 meters above sea level we’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of rugged peaks, snow-covered for much of the year, and mountain villages that remain largely untouched by time.
From the pass, we’ll descend gradually toward Marrakech, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities and the final highlight of our week-long adventure.
